The History of Joe Louis Arena

Joe Louis Arena replaced the Detroit Olympia, where the Detroit Red Wings had played since 1927. The neighborhood around the Olympia had gradually deteriorated, especially after the 1967 Detroit riot. After two murders took place near the Olympia, Red Wings owner Bruce Norris seriously considered moving to a proposed arena in suburban Pontiac. However, the city of Detroit countered with a proposal for a new riverfront arena at one-third of the rent Pontiac was offering. The package also gave the Red Wings operational control of both the arena, nearby Cobo Arena and nearby lots. <<READ MORE>>

By Mike Brudenell
Detroit Free Press Sports Writer

Former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Lomas Brown was in the house. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel made some noise. Around them sat judges, local politicians, cops and a rowdy but well-behaved bunch of east-side business types and friends.

Jimmy Mallo, manager/trainer of former world boxing champion Mary Jo Sanders of Auburn Hills, the daughter of Lions Hall of Famer Charlie Sanders, summed it up: “This is a group of decent people supporting a wonderful cause.” <<READ MORE>>

5 Things We Learned from Turf Wars III

By Antonio Cooper

1- There has to be a rematch.

With fourteen fights on the card, although a 7-7 split is extremely fortunate. The result still feels kind of unresolved in terms of bragging rights.

A rematch needs to happen, I, the intern wants it. You, the people want it. Next year's Turf Wars has all the makings for a Donofrio instant classic.

2-Adrian Hadribeaj, Ian Blair and Jake Malloway were as skilled as they come.

While there were plenty of skilled fighters, some that put together masterful performances against their opponents in the cage. It was Adrian Hadribeaj whose awe-inspiring performance would have easily took home a performance of the night. <<READ MORE>>

Turf Wars III Results

By Antonio Cooper

Donofrio Entertainment held its third installment of Turf Wars, featuring 28 of the best amateur mixed martial artist from both, the United States and Canada. With 14 fights taking place in front of a crowd well over 4,000 spectators, this installment offered the patented Donofrio excitement you’ve come to expect from Donofrio and the impact Fight League.

With 14 fights on the card, neither country would end with the upper hand having seven Canadian and U.S fighters take home victories. The Turf Wars would inevitably end in a 7-7 draw concluding the true winners to be the fans by the events end.

While the Donofrio organization always delivered fireworks no matter the event. No one expected the amount of highlight reel finishes to take place inside of the historic Joe Louis Arena, as 11 nights would end in explosive finishes from both countries. <<READ MORE>>

Canada, USA mix it up on MMA card at
Joe Louis Arena

By Marvin Goodwin

The thousands of spectators assembled at Joe Louis Arena Saturday weren't there for their health, they were there to witness a declaration of war - war between two countries separated, in these parts, by the Detroit River.

Yes, Canada and the USA got it on again in Turf Wars III: USA vs. Canada, in an Impact Fight League mixed martial arts battle royale between the two nations.

With Phil "The Voice" Davey introducing the fighters, and the electricity among a charged-up crowd, not to mention the gorgeous gals escorting the fighters to the cage, everyone got what they wanted - except a clear-cut winner.

That's right, after 14 battles, it was USA 7, Canada 7, an indication that a rematch between the two nations is in store. That's fine with the Canadian crew.

"We're coming back," said Lou Milonas, an MMA coach from Toronto who endured at customs to get to his final destination. Was the hassle factor apparent? "Yeah," smiled Milonas. "We spent an hour there. But we made it through." <<READ MORE>>

Antonio Cooper MMA Column

Prior to UFC on Fox 10, a shocking announcement took place involving top lightweight, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, as the UFC lightweight confessed to his money woes, stating

’m just out of control. It’s hard to have money in the bank, want something and not get it. I just [expletive] buy it. I have no idea what saving money is.”

As a result, the lightweight requested six fights for the 2014 fight year and seems to have began things on the right track. Winning in devastating fashion, finishing Adriano Martins with a highlight reel knockout simply moments into the first round.

With that victory Donald Cerrone earned “Knockout of the night” honors, surpassing both Anderson Silva and Joe Lauzon for fight bonus awards.

The victory should represent more than a award bonus as fight bonuses usually range between $30,000-$50,000 dollars in bonus. Including the already high salary of Cerrone which begins at $60,000 and it seems as though kicking someone in the head may have taken care of “Cowboy” money woes faster than they began.

While taking little to no damage during his last fight, look for Cerrone to step into the Octagon as soon as possible as he looks to go 2-0 inside the 2014 fight year.

Antonio Cooper MMA Column

Following UFC 167, two things were evident. One, Johnny Hendricks came out on the wrong side of a bad decision and two, something was bothering Georges St. Pierre so much that it affected his octagon performance.

Following the post-fight press conference, things would reviled themselves as it turned out GSP in-fact was soon expecting his first child. While this is a feat most men would appreciate, GSP in-fact hated the idea. While that occurred, further news established that GSP's father was also in the hospital, suffering from what could have been a fatal illness. <<READ MORE>>
